G1 for 30 Days

I've bought the G1 Android phone from T-Mobile in the U.S., and I have 30 days to figure if I wanna keep it.

If you have feedback, I'm at marc@disquiet.com.

By the way, this is my main website: disquiet.com. It's broadly about personal technology, but specifically to the extent that technology mediates music and sound and related art.

Countdown, 18 Days: That Sinking Feeling

Yow, yesterday was the worst day, by far, on the phone. It was also the first day I could describe as anything less than pretty darn good, so for now I’ll write it off as an anomaly.

Still, I don’t know if the inclement weather that has suddenly struck San Francisco, where I live, could be to blame, or if all of a sudden 10,000 more people decided to use the T-Mobile network the same time that I did, but my phone was often rendered useless as anything other than a phone yesterday. Numerous websites refused to load, time and again, throughout the day, and those that did often came up super-slowly.

For example, the movie listings at sfgate.com form a single page that comes in at less than 150k, but it took upwards of a minute and a half to load on my phone.

And I’m still having that trouble where the email program has a “connection error” and then reloads all the email, and some emails (notoriously one from a friend with a Gmail account, and also the New York Times’s user-defined alerts) come through as “null” entries.
